I’ve always been fascinated by the discussion around Gore-Tex effectiveness and the idea of using a membrane in a coat for waterproofness has never sat well with me. As such I’ve been using an alternative to Gore-Tex for 20 years (I got the fleece in the old photos in the video when I was about 18) that I think is fascinating in the way it works and they are still quite an underdog in the outdoor waterproof coat scene.
This video is not sponsored by Paramo and I’ve bought all my Paramo coats with my own money. Learn more about the coats in this video:

That was a well put together piece. I teach outdoors and have done for 25 years. My Paramo Anaolgy jackets have worked longer in more environments and outlasted every other (and I've tried everything!) jacket I have. The core truth is that nothing is waterproof always and everywhere. Paramo Analogy (well looked after) is drier longer and in more places and situations. Our entire outdoor staff (20 outdoor teachers) are issued Paramo.
Do you know the English company Buffalo? they make similar stuff for serious outdoor activities. I don't think they would be suitable for everyday use they don't look very good on the street.
Bought my first Paramo Analogy jacket over 16 years ago. This was after delivering an IT course to some guys from the British Mountaineering Society. I did a lot of walking and needed a new coat. They told me they all wore Paramoβ¦never bought a goretex jacket since.
Hmm. How is 'directionality' different to 'direction'?
Designers could combine robust non breathables on contact areas with shake dry panels on non contact areas. I mean, your rucksack is not breathable so itβs pointless having breathable fabric on your back.
These are probably great.. but I looked at the prices and fled in a hurry.
West coast Salish people wore hats and capes made from cedar. Kept them as dry as needed for survival and theybprobably smelled good too.
So what's the name of this coat/ jacket? Thanks
Iβm just about to buy a totally waterproof coat from a New Zealand company called stormline. Itβs heavy duty pvc. They make stuff for commercial fisherman and farmers. I want to be able to river fish for hours in the rain. I was badly let down by an expensive goretex wading jacket. Once bittenβ¦.
Here, now it's rainy winter season upcoming. Some just give up and use the Tretorn rain coats. Just like rubber boots, it is very unsexy, but it keeps the water out without upkeep.
Paramo just need to make an xtra small size for men, even the small is too baggy π’
I work in film/TV & when we make "rain" it's HEAVY!
We're often in bad weather for > 10hours per day & often day after day. Paramo is the best I've come across & after 26 years of use, I'll stand by it, particularly as I've seen my colleagues suffer with other technologies.
What I've found is you have to keep Paramo garments clean & I generally put my salopettes & Paramo bib top on, BEFORE I get wet & cold & I ZIP IT UP to trap my body heat & stop the ingress of rain.
I can then rely on it to keep me warm & dry ALL DAY.
What a load of nonsense, you can never be dryer inside your coat than outside? If that was true, the second it started raining you'd be completely soaked, which just isn't the case. I'm calling bullshit, I wonder why someone would say this, do they have some financial interest, hmm I wonderπ€
For sports Goretex is best because it lets you breathe, if your hiking youre hardly sweating. It all depends what you are using the jacket for. Im a Biker and I have Goretex in my shoes too. Dry and comfy.
PS: Goretex is not claimed to be totally waterproof.
Having used goretex, when you are continually wet, goretex doesn't work and you get wet from your own sweat.
Gortex is king!
Fish, hunt, ride, work it does it all well..breathable..and cuts wind.
ok, but it wont work on a motorcycle at all. water would just go straight through. so it depends on the situation.
Never buy a coat that relies solely on DWR. DWR fails in weeks, and in rain, will only last 10 minutes before wetting out.
Vessi is better. It's not a coating, it's permanent, is breathable, and allows sweat out. No PFAS (forever chemicals).
TL;DW Nikwax already sells a wash-in DWR coating that you apply to your clothes whether they're a membrane or not – you NEED to do this periodically to keep your garment water-resistant to where water beads off the face fabric. Paramo just ditches the membrane part and leans into the DWR.
Tried Keela?
5:20 ofc you are dry after a small shower and no body activity
It's all getting a bit weird. I keep getting these videos coming up in my feed, essentially slagging off Goretex.
I'm a scientist who spends a lot of my time in the field, in all weathers, mostly in the UK, but I've worked in the Alps, the Andes and in the rainforests of Malaysia.
I have never had a problem with Goretex clothing. Never. I currently use a Berghaus Goretex jacket and overtrousers and Goretex-lined Scarpa boots.
In my experience – outside, in the rain, and crossing bogs, dozens of times each year – I stay dry. Always. It can pour down for hours and the inside of my clothing and my boots will be dry. Because Goretex does seem to work, in practice, like it's supposed to.
I have no affiliation with Goretex, or with any brand, but I'm just fed up of seeing videos telling viewers that it doesn't work. Other proofing methods may be better and I'm willing to give them a go, but they seem to come in at much higher prices so I'd have to have a good reason to do so – and since my Goretex gear works just fine I'm not sure what that reason would be.
So how is a Paramo jacket any different from a base layer and wicking layer combination? Conventional wisdom tells us that those layers move moisture away from the body. How is it that this outer layer (of Analogy) any different than merely adding just another wicking layer? Can it be used as a mid layer or base layer? The expalanations just don'y make any sense!

Sorry Ben. I find your criticisms of Gortex, frankly, nonsense. Been using it for years. and I find no evidence that paramo is credible. and a simple thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Gore-Tex is not PFAS free and there is a big drive to remove all Teflon from all products due to Cancer risks associated with this product.
No PFAS!
Gore-Tex is BS.
Many companies are developing alternative waterproofing technologies that are less harmful to the environment.
