Wednesday 30th October 2024:

Today I visited a different part of the country and headed over to Bath, where the Kennet & Avon Canal begins (or ends, depending on how you think of it!).

The canal joins the River Avon in Bath, after a series of locks, one of which is named ‘Bath Deep Lock’ and CRT describes it as the second deepest lock in the UK. It certainly looked pretty big to me!

Along the towpath I passed a wide variety of boats – which I hadn’t expected to see, as I’m more used to seeing narrowboats. I was also lucky to see a Pullman Train thundering along the railway which runs alongside the canal.

So, lots of boats, trains, swans, and of course ducks, to see!

Hope you’ll enjoy the video!

Cheers,

Jeff

  1. Good morning Jeff, how beautiful Bath is from the canal, it's a very attractive city but nice to see from a different aspect.
I hadn't realised it was so hilly either, I've only ever seen flat parts.
One thing that really struck me watching the video is the vast difference in the boats & some showing that there are people living on the water on very low incomes just about hanging on to their homes somehow. I hate to think how safe some of them are for their occupants.
Thank you for the video which was a welcome distraction from a broken heart as my beloved little 16 year old cat left us this week after 10 years of her unconditional love.

  2. Hi Jeff, Newport is a lovely place to visit I always thought it to be very upmarket in that neck of the woods.
Nice shot of the passenger train passing you.
    Again great editing as always.
Thanks for the vlogs you entertain us with , as usual entertaining and enjoyable info.
Have you heard anything from Aintree boat's about Gladys?
They seem to be dragging their feet.
As always take care and stay safe out there 😊

  3. The first lock in Bath is not the first lock. As it is the Avon and Kennet navigation . So the first lock is on the river Avon from Bristol. The last lock will be before the Kennet flows into the Thames.

  4. Very nice vlog Jeff it looks very pretty in Bath I take it a lot of those boats were o permanent moorings as I wouldn't have fancied moving them especially the wide beam with the wooden frame on the front and the garden centre on the roof, Glad you went to Swindon it was HQ for about 16 years of a company I did 40 at Happy memories, Hope you have some good news on Gladys, " Free the Aintree oñe".lol take care Rob.😊

  5. I know how much you are looking forward to getting Gladys on the canals. I hope you won't have to wait longer than the beginning of spring. But I really enjoy your walking tours of the canals, and the history of their existence. Looking forward to your next video and more information about Gladys.
