Hi, this is my Nishiki Rally 12-speed racer which I purchased from a local bike shop years ago. It wasn’t until I got it out of the shop last week that I wanted to find out how old it is. I checked the Nishiki serial number database references around the net but can’t find anything listed that matches the number on the frame in the photo. I checked under the bike in the BB (usually where the s/n is) but there’s no number there. The number on the frame is SC80832919. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  1. Just from the decals I would guess this is a Giant-built Nishiki from between 1987 and 1990. I think there’s a comprehensive Asian-built bike serial number database somewhere that might help you decode it. Something tells me this was made in 1988 based on the serial number, components, and decals. I will do some more looking.

  2. I really appreciate your comment. I looked at the Giant s/n conventions, but they still didn’t seem close to what this number is. Will look around for the Asian number database, thanks!

  3. Out of interest, how are those suicide brake levers working with the modern dual pivot brakes?

  4. Not made by Giant.

The SC may stand for Southern Cross. The first digit 8 is for the year of frame manufacture, 1988, and the next 08 is the month, August.

    A 1989 model year Nishiki.
