Got this old varsity from my dad, hasn’t been ridden in years but still rides well. I’m working on cleaning it up and have a couple of questions:

Does anyone have a good method for touching up bike paint? There are a ton of little dings in the paint job – see picture 5.

The other problem is rusty spots on the chrome. I’ve seen a video recommending steel wool and wd-40 but some of the comments were saying that would damage the chrome – see picture 6.

Thanks in advance for your help and I’m open to any other suggestions for upgrades/things to check.

  1. Schwinn chrome is very durable. The most you’ll do is scratch it, even with a wire wheel and extreme pressure. If you’re worried about scratches, you can use aluminum foil instead.

As for the paint chips, it’s better to embrace them by just buffing the original paint, which looks great already.

Awesome bike. You don’t see many early varsity models like this with downtube shifters.

  3. Aluminum foil works well on the steel, I use clear finger nail polish to seal up paint chips
