I pulled this entire bike apart, cleaned everything pretty thoroughly, and have been piecing it back together. After getting the chain back on and going through the gears, the shifter wanted to push the derailer into the spokes. I was going to adjust the limit screws, but after looking at the derailer and chain line, it just looks off… Like the derailer jockey cogs don’t line up in parallel with the freewheel.
Additionally, the rear derailer body is pretty chewed up on the lower section, which leads me to think that the bike was crashed at some point and maybe bent the derailer hanger a bit.
Thanks in advance for your input on this. I’d really like to get this project wrapped up.

Yes it’s bent pretty easy job for a shop to straighten

Put a rulers edge 📏 against it and check? One side would show light in the middle. Check other side and if the ruler 📏 rocks back and forth, it’s bent. That’s what I would do.

That’s a bad angle to photograph it to know whether it’s straight, but it looks like it might not be straight.

Yup. I had a bent hanger that was MUCH more subtle, and getting it straightened made a bigger difference in cleaning up the shifting than I expected.
Yes. 5 degrees inward. If you don’t block the der with the limit screw, the chain can travel over the largest cog and get tangled in your spokes.

Yes 100%. You can bend it back by eye. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect. It just needs to be like 90% perfect.
