Bike seat theft is a common issue in London, as part of the broader challenge of bicycle theft in the city. A report by Cycling Weekly revealed that a bike is stolen every 16 minutes in London, and there’s a 98% chance the stolen bike will never be seen again⁵. The Metropolitan Police data indicates that only a small percentage of bike thefts lead to arrests or further proceedings, highlighting the difficulty in addressing this type of crime⁷.

To mitigate the risk of bike seat theft, cyclists are advised to use high-quality locks and to secure the bike frame and wheels. Some also recommend taking the seat with you when leaving your bike unattended. Despite efforts to reduce theft, the high rate of bike crime remains a significant barrier to cycling in London⁶.
