Looking to buy my first proper bicycle! Wondering if this is a good deal and/or if it’d be a waste to spend so much on a beginner like me.

It’s not too much bike, but it might be too much money for this model. What does one cost new in Canada?

It’s a really nice bike, and one that you’d be happy with. The price is, as others have said, too high. I’d bid $1,500 for that, which I think is fair. The buyer seems to feel like he should be reimbursed for work that needed to be done, anyway, and that’s not your obligation. It does help to know, however, that the bike has been serviced. Those tires are not an “upgrade.” It was his choice to change the bars and get a new saddle, one that may or may not work for you. For $1,700, if you can wait and save, you may as well pay up a bit for a new one.

I just got a 2017 giant contend sl1 disc in great condition for 500 usd. Original asking was 750. Just another data point for comparison

No such thing as too much bike!
For aluminum frame and 11-speed 105, I think the [Triban RC 520 from Decathlon](https://www.decathlon.ca/en/p/8542655/men-s-road-bike-shimano-105-rc-520-blue) for $1300 CAD is better. You get free minor adjustments from the Metrotown location which is great as a first time owner.
For steel and the newer 12-speed Sram Apex the [MEC Provincial Road 2](https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6015-893/mec-provincial-road-2-rival-bicycle-unisex?colour=Zinnia) is decent for $1800 CAD. You also get MEC support but there is no Burnaby location.
