Hey all, I’m new to cycling. I dusted off an old road bike this spring and very quickly got super into it. By this Summer I really wanted to step my game up with a new bike. I ended up picking up a 2005 Specialized S-Works and I absolutely love it. I know it’s an old bike so I guess my question is as I continue to progress as a rider should I stick with an old bike that was top of the line in its day? Or have modern bikes progressed to the point that a newer decent bike (definitely can’t afford a modern S-Works) would be an upgrade?

  1. Nine speed aluminum bike.

    I would only upgrade to new if spending 2-2.5k USD is in the budget. It would get you a fully modern bike.

    * Aluminum or maybe carbon frame
    * Hydraulic disc brakes
    * 11 or 12 speed
    * Thru axles

    If looking on the used market I think you could find modern 11 speed disk thru axle bikes for around 1.5k.
