Muriel Furrer left us at just 18 years of age after a fall at the Zurich 2024 cycling world championships. While Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel, Remco Evenepoel or Lotte Kopecky mourn the loss of Muriel Furrer, David Lappartient, president of the UCI, does not seem to care and does not give any explanation for what happened, let alone blame himself.

RIP Muriel Furrier. Always in Our Hearts. Leave your comment to remember the young swiss rider.
The stab jab coverup is getting pretty wild
RIP Muriel. As the previous response suggested, a local club event would have had marshals who could and would have called for an ambulance. Too many deaths in cycling. Clearly, Hanson’s brain is on vacation and his mouth isn’t working at all. Who does represent the riders? Maybe the pharmaceutical industry should take up their cause, because at this rate of demise, before long, there won’t be any riders left to sell dope to! Keep up the good work Cycling Highlights, eventually you’ll get through.
Every year the cycling gets more corrupt , being taken put over by state interests
What is UCI?
Are any of the following items NOT mandatory for every race run under UCI auspices ? If not, why not ?
1) An RF tag on every bike, embedded into the number plate attached to the saddle. The device costs around a dollar and scanners which can detect them at distances of around 20 metres cost around 20 dollars. Place scanners by the roadside, or if necessary build a frame like the ones used for distance markers such as the flamme rouge; simple software can send data from the the scanners to a central collection and monitoring point and re-distributed to marshals. Such a system has been in place on the buses in Nottingham for more than 30 years.
2) A lightweight GPS transmitter on every bike would cost around 10-20 dollars. I know there were unsuccessful trials a few years ago, but it was not clear to me whether the problems were due to transmission problems or problems processing the data. If television pictures can be distributed from motorbikes via helicopters, then something similar must be possible for GPS data. Data relay systems are a mature technology.
3) A network of observers around the course, connected via voice radio and data links. In ideal circumstances each observer can see two colleagues, one behind them and one ahead of them as the course runs, so that all of the course has visual coverage.
But what happened!
If you want to know wherè a cyclist is, you just need to ask the anti doping testers. Apparently, they have to know where you are 24/7/365.
RIP Muriel Furrer. Young brilliant future wiped out by incompetence. Incompetence at UCI that has persisted over long periods, decades. Sport governing bodies in Switzerland seem to have so many protections and so little accountability. Maybe that's why they are located there. It is 100% incomprehensible that at the sports World event, in their home nation, a participant crashes out and is unattended for over an hour. Criminal negligence is almost certain to have occurred, but it is clear from early response that it will take a rising up by interested parties demanding justice to effect an complete objective investigation. Just as with each minute that passed without attendance the participants chances to survive diminished, the days that pass without a full official investigation and report – the likelihood of revealing the root cause diminishes – as the sight will have been 'cleaned' and other measures will have been taken to muddy the waters for investigators. This tragic event is reflective of the pathetic state of cycling as reported regularly by Cycling Highlights. It really is tragic what's happened to the sport under the guidance of the UCI, it is not getting better, and it's playing out in lives and careers lost due to unsafe conditions on and off the bike.
With current technologies, this should not have happened!
The heads of far too many sports organizations more resemble Roman emperors, looking at their participants like gladiators for the entertainment and of course revenue.
8 ads in four minutes of video…too much. Would have loved to learn more about the young rider who died but I will look to other means as watching this ad loop with little tidbits of information is too much.
The technology exists to inform someone if you suffer a crash while just out riding. Why isn't this adopted in Pro cycling? Why don't organisers deem a race a wet race as in F1 and dictate the appropriate tyres, rather than everyone riding on slicks in torrential rain on painted tarmac. RIP Muriel.
I agree on all what is said in this video!
I am an ex pro and this young girl dying is as sad as it gets. It should have never happened! The safety of the women and men can be improved applying various majors. UCI President and Adam Hensen…what have you guys done do increase safety?
You are so RIGHT!!! RIP Muriel and shame on UCI
Absolutely tragic.
Why aren't cyclists wearing full face helmets?
The idea that she was lying there in a cold wet forest floor, severely injured and unattended for at least an hour during the biggest race in cycling is unbearable. I haven’t stopped thinking about Muriel and her devastated family. They will forever question if she could have been saved. It’s an absolute outrage that nobody takes their responsibility for this life cut short. Rest in Paradise, sweet Muriel ❤
so you think you ranting in your papa smurf voice will change anything ? i wanted info about the girl and what happened , not your usual personal gripe !
The fact that she was unattended for hours after the accident speaks volumes of UCI's rot and incompetence!
xc competitions are so dangerous would help use fullface helmets to prevent this?
Not sure over here what you are trying to accomplish. I gave up after 3 minutes. Have some respect for family, for fellow competitors, and for cycling communities. If you have a point, make it in one minute. To be frank this video is not good and that is why I never watched it to the end.
R.I.P. QUEEN
Sanctioned racing sucks.
Lots of rules established for those in power to feed their egos and wallets
Her teammates are mostly at fault.
They should've realized that she hadn't shown up when expected and raised the alarm with officials.
corruption , smoke and mirrors ,sliding panels..lance armstrong could have
blown the lid off the UCI bad apples, ,now they control everything ,doping
subterfuge dictates absolute silence..
conclusions? Stop riding XC and stuff like that and go ride downhil or enduro. It's safer, less people died there (I don't remember anyone dying there)
So much waffle and incoherent ranting and i'm no wiser to what happened to Muriel at the end of the video than i was before i pressed play. 🤷♂️ RIP Muriel. 😢
