I have this exact Caloi Vulcan. And in the future i plan to completely turn it into an urban bike. So I really wanted to convert it into single speed, but just don’t understand bikes enough to know what i would need to buy to make it work well! It’s possible, right? The workshop that takes care of my bike says it’s impossible, but i’ve saw some people on the internet that turned MTBs into single speed urbans, but just can’t really understand how they did it… Thanks beforehand!

  2. Either a “magic gear” and or half links.

Or a chain tensioner such as the Surly Singulator or Paul Melvin … Rennen Rollenlager etc.

Edit: Of course you will also need to strip down the drive train and from the looks of the bike pictured, get a single speed freewheel. To finish it off nicely, switch the cranks up for a single speed set, the one in the pic look like the rings are pinned on and not removable. You might also get rid of the brake and shift levers and go with just brake levers, just to look tidy.

  3. i would not do it

    you need horizontal dropouts

the frame does not have them

    what is the goal?

    be lighter?

just don;t take any water 🙂

  4. depends what level of goodness you desire.

simplest thing – remove both derailleurs along with shifters and cables, remove chainrings 1 and 3, order single speed sprocket for your hub and whatever spacers you need from aliexpress, and since u/wlexxx2 properly mentioned your bike doesnt have horizontal dropouts to set proper tension of the chain, order again from aliexpress single speed tensioner. thats about the cheapest and the easiest way to do it.

but, since thats not the best bike to do singlespeed, if you want to do something with it, you can convert it to 1x.

  5. The cleanest way to convert vertical dropouts to SS is with a White Industries ENO eccentric hub (disc). It gives you enough room to accommodate chain wear. You’ll still need to be selective on gearing and a half-link may be needed.

  6. Honestly, you might regret it. 2x or 3x can switch gears faster for undulating terrain and is a lot less expensive to maintain.
