West and south Cumbria was crawling with scouse county lines gangs( probably still is), as I found out fairly quickly when I got a job for a third sector charity that provided housing and other assistance to homeless people, addicts, prison leavers etc. I'm a scouser myself and believe me when I say,, that some people were wary of me just because of the accent. I used to have a fair bit of contact with the police and attend MDT meetings with them and other agencies to discuss vulnerable people (what agency was providing what support to whom etc) and scouse county lines gangs came up in conversation quite a lot and they were causing havoc. So it is no wonder these people were aggressive and it was probably your size, demeanour and confidence which stopped you being attacked, but the size of that place and the amount of undesirables living there, you did well to not rise to them and leave when you did. I no longer do that kind of work, but I doubt little has changed in the few years since I left it.
I visited friends in Egerton Court in the 90's, it was grim and dodgy back then. Imagine being stuck in that environment. I was lucky and left the UK for China many years ago. Never looked back!

One of the worst ive been to is Harehills in Leeds and certain areas of Bradford, don't know if you've ever been but but it's worth a visit, especially on a night time
One thing about deprived areas, why do the residents feel the need to dump mattresses, carpets etc in the street? They really need to take some responsibility for their own environment.
It is a shame that people who live for decades in deprived areas, learn to be helpless, have no goal, no purpose, start filling in the void with drugs, then to support the bad habits start stealing etc. People loose the sense of responsibility for environment and surroundings, sort of become numb. Very sad that this happens to people. I would add this some, animals can came round and become accustomed to new, more positive behaviours, those people live in despair with no help. Sad, really sad. I've lived here before, I didn't mind it compared to some parts of barrow. I've lived here all my life there is some brilliant people here, it's just depressing living here like anywhere else in the country p. The rest of the UK won't be far behind, I'm waiting to build my strength so I can get back to work after a accident. And get the fuck out of here or im going to end up losing my mind 😢
Seems to me looking at the state of the stairwells and streets in general, the people themselves don’t help themselves much. Drug taking, alcoholism, and general filth everywhere are caused by irresponsible people who couldn’t give a toss.
Sadly seeing the decay of Englands estates and communities is depressing,,and the politicians deny these places even exist,,you won't find any MPs walking round places like this asking the residents if they have any concerns and are they happy,, eventually,one day,reports like this and what Billy exposes will be banned Orwell's 1984 is on the way,,
