The bike is listed for $500AUD specialized rock hopper. Would it be worth buying it then upgrading the fork and drive chain than a dropper post. Or would it be worth getting a better bike with a decent fork and 1x drive chain and just adding a dropper post?

will probably just be easier and cheaper if you buy a used bike with everything you need instead of upgrading it all, the parts by themselves can be so expensive especially for things like forks 😆 not to mention you either have to install them yourself or get a pal to do it or it could cost extra of it’s at a bike shop
it’s better and easier if you go with bike that has good fork, dropper and other things you said, plus you will probably spend less than upgrading this bike
