Installing a new chain on a vintage Schwinn Continental. When I lined up the new one with the old one the length was exactly the same with the new one although the chains links did not align side by side both chains were the same. So I installed it but noticed that the rear derailleur likes to move forward. I installed it when the derailleur was moved back and the chain was taught but when the derailleur moves forward the chain becomes slack.

Am I supposed to move the derailleur all the way forward and link the chain while it's like that? Because if so then it would be 3 links shorter.

Or, is the derailleur not supposed to move like that and I have to tighten it down somehow?
