Hi Guys, for my next project I would like to try and fit a modern groupset to an old steel frame. I am looking for the right frame. Some things I have figured out by now:
1: You need a derailleur hanger to fit a modern rear derailleur.
2: The space between the rear dropouts is too small, I will need to bend it to create enough space.
3: I will need to drill out the holes for the brake calipers to make a modern brake fit.
I think you can install external bottom bracket cups to fit a modern crankset, but I do not really know what to pay attention to when choosing a frame that will take those cups.
Any legend on here that can give me some tips on that topic before I buy a frame? Other tips or remarks are also appreceated!

1. Yes you need a derrailure hanger, but it does not need to be a replaceble one, it can be an integrated one on a steel frame.
2. Frame setting can be done, but note the wheel fixture method (Bold/Quick release/through axle) Bold and qr is no problem, modern through axles cannot fit an older frame without serious modification.
3. Unclear, someone else might know more.
Rear derailleur hangers haven’t changed in forever AFAIK. Even the latest Shimano direct mount RDs all come with a B-link that makes them compatible with standard hangers. The only derailleurs you wouldn’t be able to fit are SRAM UDH full mount, but those are only the very latest Red XPLR and mountain Transmission groupsets.
As for bottom bracket, easiest by far will be getting a frame with BSA/British threads. Many Italian frames (Pinarello, Colnago, etc.) may come with ITA/Italian threads which should still be doable, but may require a third party bottom bracket depending on which crank you plan to use. Avoid frames with anything else like French threads or something which will be much trickier to source parts for.
