I recently bought a used 2019 Orbea MX50 for my wife, and during her first test ride, the entire derailleur came off, although the hanger seems to be intact. I have never witnessed anything like this before. She was riding very slowly, so there shouldn't have been enough force to cause this issue. The derailleur is visibly bent and damaged, but I thought the hanger usually breaks first in these situations. Is the derailleur repairable, or should I consider buying a new one?

Well… it’s tourney… which roughly equates to „its a dogshit derailleur that shouldn’t be sold“. I too am surprised this happened, but if it happens, I’d expect it to happen to a tourney derailleur.
Derailleur’s done, and the hanger might still be damaged. You’ll need a hanger alignment gauge to check properly (a bike mechanic would do this for you) or if you take it off and see if it sits flat on glass, that can give you a clue.
The derailleur is just done and will need to be replaced, luckily this derailleur was a very cheap one so not a big loss. Your bike cooperative might have a replacement for like $5, or if you can find some free kids bike on the second hand market, it’ll likely have the same derailleur you can take. New ones are also very cheap
Upgrade to Acera or Altus.
