I've been eyeing a 3T Strada for a while, and just found the Rival model for 25% off. As I was gearing up to negotiate with my partner on pulling the trigger (she still doesn't understand why I want a road bike when I have a perfectly OK gravel bike, even though she has running shoes and hiking boots…), I stumbled on the Rival 1x setup for more than half off!
I'd buy it in a heartbeat and just upgrade if I didn't like it, but the bike isn't drilled for an FD, so it's gotta be all in.
I think I know which way I'm leaning, but wanted to share my considerations for feedback from the hive mind.

Huh. TDIL you can’t edit an image post…
So, for those considerations:
I live around NYC, so my climbing is flat to moderate, enough that I figure I could manage, especially coming from a 2×10 GRX. I also mostly ride solo, so matching cadence in a pack is maybe less of a thing. That said, I’m looking for a proper road bike to maybe feel more comfortable riding with groups on the weekend, so perhaps I regret not having the range? Anyone else get a 1x only setup and regret it, or is the gear good enough now to cover most situations? I’m no pro, couldn’t even tell you my FTP, so not sure if that means I need the range more or less (need being a relative term).
My final thought is, given that I’m saving around $1400 on the 1x setup, if it truly becomes onerous, I’d have enough leftover to someday upgrade to the Red 1×13, or maybe the Challenge internal powerhub thing. And one other thing: Will the 1x make me look like some wannabe tryhard? It’s stupid, I know, but I’m already self-conscious rolling up to these group rides as I don’t have nearly the fitness I wish I could as a 40-something dad who still loves to, well, tryhard.
Thanks for sharing!

Unless I was anal about cadence or had tons of long decent where you need ridiculous high gearing, I see no reason 1x isn’t enough with say a 40-46t chainring and a 10-44 cassette. What is the gearing on the 1x?
You’ll probably be just fine with the 1x, especially if it’s that much cheaper! I’d definitely switch out the chainring for a bigger one though, 46t at least. 40t is on the low end even for a gravel bike and you’ll still have plenty of low end with a 10-44 cassette
I think outside of very steep extended grades you will be fine with the gearing range, but as an alternate route have you tried sticking some slick or near-slick tires on the gravel bike?
2x. the more road you do the more you need a double chainring. the tighter gearing in the middle of the cassette is really helpful. having a 2 tooth gap between gears is much better than 3 or 4 of a single ring.
1x is so clean, and a bit lighter. I’ve been enjoying a 1x city bike for about 9 months. Lovely not to have a front derailleur to shift.
why anyone would consider 1x on a road bike is beyond me. what do you give up by adding a front der and chain ring? maybe a little bit of weight? some minor chain line shifting considerations? 2x gives you SO much more gear range, and smaller steps between gears.
if the price is right on the 1x then by all means go for it, i’m sure it’s still great. but 2x is strictly better imo
