Wanted to ride my new bike around in its current state to see about fit prior to getting the steerer tube cut. I usually have a 20 mile route I do to put the bike through its paces in all sorts of conditions. The compression plug is well above the stem. Is this a huge risk? How else do people play around with fit?

  2. As long as nothing is loose. Just put the front tire between your knees and to turn the handlebar. If it moves with little resistance, then it’s not safe. It should be really connected and not slip left or right. Also, check it up and down to make sure your spacers are good. You can ride it around the block a couple times just to be sure

  3. As long as it’s tight enough (no play in headset, can’t turn spacers by hand) it’s good to go. functionally no different from a less shit configuration. Remember all the top cap is setting is preload. your stem clamp is holding everything secure
