This is my first time getting new bar tape in years as I have just come back to cycling. I got a new bar wrap and noticed it felt slippery at times and now is peeling. Took a closer look and started pulling away this layer. Is this a layer the shop forgot to remove or crappy bar tape? If it’s something the shop forgot how can I address this or can I easily re-wrap this myself?

  1. I don’t know that I’ve ever had to peel a film off of that side of my bar tape. If I had to take a guess, I’d say it’s a cheapo film meant to protect the design on the bar tape that just can’t hold up to any sort of wear.

  2. Cool tape but it didn’t shouldn’t do that
Learning to wrap your own is fun – Park Tool has an excellent how to video. It looks fiddly but is actually very Zen, one of favourite jobs to do. With the right tape it only takes about 15 minutes

  3. I’ve been thinking about getting that same tape. I wonder if the shop overstretched it and damaged the top layer?

  4. Taking a look at Cycology products online, they state their wraps have a “Silicone coated for grip and durability.” I’m guessing this is what’s peeling off.
