Switch out those cantilever brakes with some simple v-brakes (doesn’t need to be anything expensive and you don’t even have to change the levers), switch those tyres for something with a bit of puncture protection (Continental Contact Urban is a very budget-friendly tyre, with excellent grip at surprisingly good rolling resistance while having decent puncture protection – an all-around great commuter package), take a look at the saddle and perhaps go to a bike dealer to get some measurements taken in order to find a saddle that properly fits, and she’s golden.

The frame has mounting points for a rack, so everyday versatility can potentially be greatly enhanced too, and mounting mudguards shouldn’t be an issue either.
