I don't know why, but it didn't see a rail road track that was embedded in the road, at an 45° angle… So the inevitable happens and I crashed hard, going almost 30km/h. It knocked my head on the asphalt hard enough to give me trauma marks just from the helmet! I smashed my face on the road and almost scraped out my eyeball… Got 3 stitches, a severely bruised shoulder and knee & arm. Luckily nothing else. They did a couple of x-rays and put me in the MRT machine, i am fine. Apart from a broken ego and sore body.

The medic told me, if i had not worn a helmet i would be gone in one or the other way… Helmet doesnt even look that bad. But its cracked.

And for the bike – i dont know, its still in police custody since they couldnt fit it in the ambulance. Keep your fingers crossed its fine!!

  1. Thats the thing, you think it will never happen to you. And then it does and it only takes a split second, and believe me, you’ll appreciate the helmet then

    Story time!

Just this past Sunday, I was riding my bike out from my neighborhood and saw a guy walking up a little hill. A road cyclist, in full hit, and was walking his bike up this hill helmet in hand. This little hill we are going up follows a big fast decent.

He was rolling his bike next to him, one of [these](https://argonautcycles.com/RM3-custom-carbon-road-bike/), and I recognized his bike from the shop. I thought something might be wrong, so I slowed down and asked if everything ok, knowing I had tools on me and maybe I could help him.

I said, “hey man! all good? I’ve got tools, is the bike ok?” to which he replied, “no man! bike is fucked” so I rolled over to him to see what was going on.

The dude turns and looks at me, and I shit you not, I can see this dudes skull through is forehead. He had a wide open gash I could have stuck my thumb through. I was immediately like, “omg you need to go the hospital right now.” He pulled out his phone and took a selfie to see and had the same reaction as me, ‘omg’. He was close to home, and lucid, so I let him be.

Turns out, the dude was mobbing down the hill and was looking down at his computer and hit a parked car.

I went into the shop later in the day and asked if we knew the guy and described his bike. And yup, we knew him alright. We got him on the phone to check on him and the dude ended up getting 30 stitched in his forehead. THIRTY! But, no concussion!

Also cracked his frame in half 🙁

Helmet saved that dudes life. Full stop.

Tram tracks were my worst accident. Helmets for the win. Will be hopeful for your bike. I would have been tempted to go directly to wherever the police were holding it after being released from the hospital, no matter the pain (sure, officer, I can ride it, no problem, I imagine myself saying). Is the kind of town/city where the police might be kind enough to bring it back to you so you don’t have to go to get it?

  5. You walked away, that’s the main thing. Watch out for other niggles after a few days.. I still got shoulder issues 1yr after my last crash. If it aches, get it checked.

    Hope the recovrry goes ok!

  6. Glad to still have you around brother! Definitely a solid lesson that an ounce of prevention is literally worth a pound of flesh sometimes.
