Finally got around to building a rear wheel for this three speed hub from Sturmey Archer … it's a little heavy but it sure is a blast. Now I can keep up with the roadies on the hills and have a high gearing I would usually find too exhausting for traffic

Wow, didn’t know anyone made a fixed IGH. How does shifting feel? Can you shift under load/torque? On other internal gear hubs I’ve ridden, you have to coast or at least reduce torque while shifting.

I have that same hub on my Iro Phoenix. I like it a lot. But, yeah, it is pretty heavy.
Still kick myself sometimes for not getting one when Amazon was selling them. Now they seem to be out of production.
How do you like the ratios though?
I got slammed about a year ago when I explained that these were both fixed gear and an IGH. These are definitely fixed gear. Saint Sheldon Brown was a big fan of the Sturmey ASC hub, which dates back to the late 40s to early 50s. Unfortunately he passed before these went public. I personally believe they could have named it the SB3.
Thanks OP for sharing! These are awesome. I’ve had one for probably 7-8 years now. I like it a lot, but don’t love it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool. But it’s not perfect, though. And even with it’s shortcomings, it’s always my fastest fixed gear ride because of the multiple on the fly gear options.

If you own this hub, DO NOT, skid or backpedal. IGH fixed hubs cannot handle this, and will break. Brakes need to be used, if you are going this route.

Sturmey Archer hubs are neat! I’ve never ridden one, myself, but Sheldon Brown put the idea in my head about 30 years ago and it’s never quite gone away.
So I did this years ago on a build. Had a 3-speed fix. The internal gearing always seemed odd… to properly shift you would have to apply some back pressure for it to shift.
So I had to bunny hop, kick back, shift to have it engage. Multiple mechanics took a look at it and it was the best result we could come up with.
Sold the entire build for …. Way too little.
Still kicking myself but I had to move across the country.

So ive had 2 of these crap out on me 1st lasted 3 or so years, 2nd one had a chain wrap up on it after hitting a pothole, and messing up third gear, which it was in at the time, anyone know who to take to in Boston?
