Just did this today with Shimano Altus set from the 80’s. When I got the bike, the back wheel was all jammed up so I didn’t operate the drivetrain at all. I’ve been slowly rebuilding it, and today I set up the drivetrain for the first time, and was amazed at how smooth the shifting was!

I love friction shifting. It’s simple, pretty cheap, easy to maintain, not hard to do, and it’s really fun to dump into a radically different gear all at once
Yeah you gotta trim sometimes, but no big whoop.
