I nabbed this bad boy the other day from another city’s craigslist and it arrived in better condition than the listing indicated. My intention was to xbike it into a commuter but its so perfect that I don’t really want to mess with it. The only unoriginal part is the switchblade fork which some people are saying is an improvement on the stock fork.
What do you think?
Edit: 1988 Trek 8000. It looks like I just bought it from the shop.

Leave it alone. Have a look at drivetrain wear and substitute whatever needed. Fresh cables, casings, tyres and tubes, grease BB and HS and enjoy.

I have an 83 diamondback that I kept all original. Put a basket on the front and posted it to this sub.

New rubber, mew chain if it needs it, cables and housing.
IMO, keep it as period as possible, you have a beauty there.

Those chainstay mounted u brakes… I have a hard rock with some of those that I don’t know what to do with it. They’re ugly, heavy, and have crap clearance. I was going to make on thread on here asking if anyone else has any ideas on dealing with them.

Def keep the switchblade fork! This bike is honestly sick as-is. Congrats on finding an XL.
If this were mine, I would overhaul the bearings, ditch the dork disk and reflectors, replace tires, new cables/housing, new grips, replace brake pads if needed, and throw some wider/more swept bars on it. I would also steal the suntour xc II pedals off my girlfriend’s bike and put them on here, throw a bag or two on it, and maybe un-biopace the chainrings? You do you though!
