If you’re thinking about external perception, then I have to tell you that you never experienced any time when cycling was not a sport – no person currently alive has. And if you’re thinking about your own perception of it, well then that’s entirely up to you. Get out your old touring bike again and just go places without looking at speed or distance. Just ride.

I still spend every vacation on my bike, with a tent and a sleeping bag (and some other stuff). Sometimes with a clear destination, sometimes with just “the sea” or “the mountains” as my goal. Some days, you’ll go 200 km, others you’ll go 0 – some places are just too nice to leave behind.

P.S.: That’s a great colour, by the way. Not quite my favourite (nothing beats a good, old British Racing Green), but still very nice.

I get why you feel that way but I hardly disagree. Cycling just like any other hobby can be a lot of things. It can be recreational in multiple ways as well as it can be competitive in nature. I remember how my neighbour got up at 6 o’clock to prepare for an amature cross country competition on his 6k$+ carbon bike, as well as I remember talking to a guy who enjoys riding his cheap folding bike through a park every Friday.
