  1. I’d give that a light tap around with a coin. Listen for a change in the sound… because that does look like the carbon has failed. I do hope not though.

  2. Yeah I’d be concerned

Can you squish it gently and see if it deflects? This was told to me by a canyon staff.

Also can you tap on it like how you tap on a watermelon? But use your nails and hear if the sound changes when you tap around. Obviously this isn’t a full examination but rather a quick indication.

  3. as someone who has his cadex frame cracked recently, you’re lucky that it shows from the outside.

my crack was inside and i only felt it wobbly, while then on a Z1 ride it fully cracked.

this thing is toast and must be either repaired or fixed. canyon will send a new frame if you trash this one for them

  4. I’m no bike surgeon but that seems highly likely to be carbon damage. Conchoidal cracks on multiple sides of the tube are not a good sign.

Can’t tell from the pics, could be both. Anyway, bad place to have a crack like that.
One way to “test it” is mark the cracks and ride the bike and see if they expand under load. But this is obv risky (!!!) if it really is a crack of the carbon and not just paint.
Bring it to a mechanic, maybe?!
Common “bike knowledge” says that if you put pressure on it, like with your thumb, and it ain’t moving under your pressure or making those cracking-plastic-noises – like a can does – it’s most probably just paint. you can even just press with both hands a little highter than the crack and put your whole body-weight on it, since they should hold it easily if the frame is still intact. Or jump down some high-ish curbs with little speed when no traffic is coming… Each of this bears it’s own risk of damage or bodily harm, so only do it at your own risk!

You’ll only get 100% security if you send it in for an x-ray since that’s the only way to see if the carbon frame is still intact or not, which is pricey. This would fuck with my head though, so not sure if I would be able to enjoy the ride without it?!

  6. Even if it “looks” that’s only the *paint* that’s cracking, I’d say paint doesn’t just crack, unless the tube behind it is cracking.

For me, that carbon is toast.

That looks like a crack in the clear coat. If you get no sound change with the coin taps it’s more than likely the clear coat. Not uncommon, especially on a seat stay as they are designed to flex
