So today I found out that there are bicycles with belt instead of chain (like the car timing belt).
Another thing I found out today is that there is a new type of transmission that uses just one gear but has interior mechanism. Kind of like car automatic transmission. Called Shimano Alfine.
What do you think about the reliability of these two new mechanisms? And the expenses of maintenance compared to the regular gears and chain.
Also the bicycles I saw have just one gear on the front gear where the pedals are, instead of the normal 3 gears in front. Why is that? So basically a one gear on front and this planetary transmission thing in the back.
