I asked this question while replying to a post on another sub, but I figured this is likely the best place to ask the question…
I am new to cycling (i mean, serious cycling), so total newbie.
I do research a lot and have been doing that day and night for a while now, but without real life "field" experience, so choices are hard to make.
I'm settled on a Canyon Grizl, but cannot figure out which one specifically.
I plan to do mostly bikepacking. Some casual commuting or family ride, but mostly bikepacking.
There are two Grizl models that caught my attention:
Second one, AL frame appears to be a better fit for me as a beginner because of the price, 2by drivetrain and because I don't plan to set any speed records.
Then the CF model on the first link caught my attention. It's $700 more (I'm in Canada), but CF frame.
To summarize:
Option 1: Grizl CF SL 6 – sram apex axs xplr. 12s 1by
Option 2: Grizl 7 AL – shimano grx rx820. 12s 2by
Initially, I was mostly concerned about the drivetrain. Having more gear range sounds like a good idea for a newbie.
So I did some digging on the gear ratio website (forgot the actual address, but you guys likely know which one I am talking about) and compared the two drivetrains. The 1by is obviously more spaced, but did look that bad.
But then again, judging numbers without real experience means nothing lol
The electronic shifting on the sram apex sound nice, but more about comfort and luxury.
The thing that got me thinking is: what about the combination of CF frame + electronic shifting? Does it justify the price difference?
Specially because the Shimano GRX RX820 of the AL model appears to be a higher tier than the sram apex, right?
Would appreciate the input from more experienced cyclists.
If you could provide some brief explanation on your choices to help on my edification, I would be even more grateful!
Thanks a lot!
