I’m a complete newbie in selecting a city bike and therefore would appreciate your thoughts on this retro bike.

My route is about 4 kilometers and 26 meters of elevation.

It weighs 13 kg, and is equipped with 16-Speed Claris Gear System from Shimano.

Over the last month I was commuting to work on a 15 kg mountain bike equipped with Shimano Deore gear system. The ride downhill was very pleasant but uphill was not hard per se but sweaty, and I hope a proper city bike with racks to put my bag will deliver a pleasant sweat free ride.

Thank you!

  1. I’d argue that what you linked is *not* a city bike whatsoever. It’s clearly a design that puts the looks first, nostalgia second, price third and performance basically dead last. It has the retro looks, but If you want a retro bike, I’d say – go the whole way and get an actual one.

A modern city bike would have much wider tires for starters. 25mm is not only very uncomfortable to ride on, it’s also rather inefficient. To degree where using a commuter focused tires on your mountain bike would likely make the mountain bike faster than this bike – *including uphill*.

If you find the uphill “swaty” you *can* usually just switch to lower gears and slow down. The amount of elevation you mention is not something that would pose any issues to gearing range of any mountain bike.
