I'm looking for a nice, budget long travel rig and have narrowed it down to the trek slash 9.7 gen 5 or the specialized status 170 2. I already have a good short travel bike and need something with more travel that I can take to the bike park and on some larger, more techy trails. I still need it to be able to climb though, because most of the bike parks near me don't have lifts. Personally, I'm leaning towards the specialized, as it seems like a better deal, but figured l'd get a second opinion. What do yall think?

Well on looks i would take the specialized. Also if you only want to use it downhill, the coil shock will serve you better
Specialized, if you want the trek, get the 8 because the 9.7 isn’t very good in terms of spec, and weighs the same.
They’ll both probably be fine, pick the prettier one.
I don’t think “Specialized” and “Trek” can be used in the same sentence as “Budget.”
If you have lots of climbing, take the lighter one. Besides that, we can’t say much if you don’t include the spec
Personally I’d take the trek based on looks, in tube storage, and the carbon frame if they’re priced roughly the same.
Don’t want to confuse things further but the Marin Alpine Trail 1 or XR could be good options as well… not sure on price comparison directly but at $4300 CAD the Alpine 1 had pretty excellent value when I last compared a few brands. The XR at $6300CAD for the upgrades it had was still good value but pushing most folks ‘budget’
