The German motorcycles you see that were equipped with sidecars were absolutely brilliant in their design. The wheel on the sidecar was powered via a driveshaft from the motorcycle. Thus giving the motorcycle not just one but two driven wheels. This was ideal while offroad, in sand, mud, etc.
