stem and handlebars if you want to alter the way it fits
edit: brake pads alongside tires – get kool stops

Nice. Those seem like a good place to start. How do the cables, housing, chain, chainrings, and cassette look? Where do you plan on riding it? Can you send us a drivetrain shot? (Drive-side is the preferred side for photos.)
I have a salsa for true mountain biking so this would be for commuting and gravel rides.

Rub the belly of this little fella.

Pump up the tires, see if they hold air first. Alot of the time they do. If they do, ride it. Are the wheels true, is the drivetrain lubed? is anything loose?
$20 is a deal. You scored. True temper tubing from the early 90s.

Air is holding and the brakes seem fine š taking her out for her first spin!
The Matrix rims of this era were notoriously tough to fit some tires on. Back in the day I would not even try a Continental tire on those.

Ride it. Nothing tells you what needs to change like use, and a lot of times I will look and think āIād prefer a __ā buy it and install it only to revert. Got to ride it first, then pick the changes.

Thats a beautiful old bike. Spray some rust inhibitor down the frame tubes so it last a good while!

Start by riding it, as a benchmark.

For the most part it rides great! The handlebars are too close and one of the shifters didn’t work. I’m looking at stem risers and replacing the drive train with a 1x

You can start with ripping May, June, and July off of that calendar on the fridge.
If the state of your calendar is a good indication of how often stuff on the fridge is paid attention to, there is every possibility there is a 3 month old lunch someone packed up in there that no one has noticed.

Try to feel for play or roughness in any of the bearings (headset, bottom bracket, hubs) research more about determining this in each of these bearing points as its too much to explain in a reddit comment, but the hasic is the bearings should be tight so nothing moves any direction it shouldnt but shoukd rotate freely without too many vibrations. Also check the brakes and gears work. From there you can get an idea of what it is you need to do to get it back up and running again
