Yeah they did, or you could get a Cross Check. Most of those are ED coated black. Same thing. I think you made out better with the purple honestly

My 1991 Specialized Sirrus is this exact color scheme. I love the that the paint looks black but upon further inspection looks like a galaxy.

My 1989 Rock Hopper Comp looks black unless it is in the sun. Then it’s a deep purple flake.
This is an awesome looking paint scheme though if I ever find a black one I’ll trade you, looks beautiful
