Shifter Stuck?

I’ll preface this with that I’m a complete noob. I picked up my first road bike 2nd hand about a week ago.

I cleaned her up, changed grip tape, and changed the pedals.

I took her out for the first time today for a quick 20 minute ride, during my ride my left shifter got stuck. I tried to trouble shoot by spraying some WD-40 & hot water with dish soup, thinking maybe there was gunk build up. But no luck.

Any insights?

  1. Gummed up would be my thought too. I might pursue that avenue more as these shifters are not user serviceable AFAIK. WD40 seems like a good choice or isopropyl alcohol sprayed into the workings and exercising them.

  2. Your shifter might be broken. There’s a good chance it’s covered by warranty.

This series of 105 shifters (as i recall) is notorious for breaking when it is installed on a bike with a double. It can be forced into the third chain ring position, and when you shift back down to the second, sometimes they break. I don’t know if Shimano will still cover this, but I replaced many of them.

So when I have hoods rolled off my 6800 ultegra shifters, the hood interferes with the cable and nothing works until I put the hoods back on right. I’m not sure if that’s your issue but it trips me up every time I do cable maintenance.

  4. Another thought, when was the last time you put cables and housings? Is that ferrule white or corroded?
