A friend brought his bike to me because the head of the shift cable popped off. When i put a new shift cable in, it doesn’t shift. The lever is activating and I can hear the pawls doing their thing but the cable isn’t shifting. The cable moves a bit but it’s more like its being nudged during the process. I’ve clicked the small paddle out all the way before inserting the cable. What’s going on?

  1. Possible that the cable end isn’t in hooked in to the mechanism inside the lever. Possible that the lever mechanism is damaged in that section.

Easiest way to find out is try fitting a new cable (or refitting that one as if it were new)

In my experience you need to put some tension on a brifters cable to get it to shift. Just pull on it with your other hand while shifting. If it still does not shift, then you might have some issues. But i dont expect it to be broken.
