This is an R8000 front derailleur. There is always noise around the crank when pedalling and I think it might be derailleur run as it not indexing to 2x, instead it has 3 positions that it can lock into when I’m shifting. Is this normal and there’s just an index or limit screw somewhere that should block it to 2?
Why does my 2x front derailleur index to 3x positions instead of 2? How do I fix this?

One is a trim setting, not an actual third gear. It’s useful when you’re in the big chainring and larger cassette gears.

It really should be 4 positions.
If you think the noise is from your FF/Chain then run the adjustment tool in the e-tube app.
The up to date version on iPhone is much better than the android app and walks you through the process. It’s not a scary process at all, push some buttons, tap once or twice and push some buttons again.

Trim, for when you’re high and low in the rear. Keeps the chain from rubbing.
TRIM TRIM TRIM. you should have a fourth, lower your cable tension
Its normal, its for avoid the friction when you cross the chain.
In a sequence its like that:
Small gear, no tension (1)-> clic and change to the big chainring, neutral position(2)-> other clic and your derailleur move a little off to get a better position with small cogs(3)->you push the small lever and the front mech go back to the small chainring (4)->other clic of the small lever and the front mech its completly in rest.
It’s the trim gear, there is actually 4 gear for front derailleur. 2 of them are the trim.
To avoid the chain rubbing the FD, while on the big-chainring-big-cassette or small-chainring-small-cassette.
It’s trim. It works fine.
