First of all I’m sorry if this level of bike neglect is causing hard feelings.
This is my dad‘s old road bike, which somehow has seen too little care since he grew older. Clearly it’s a really nice bike in both brand and emotional value and albeit being too small for me, I would love to return it to a sustainable state.
I have some experience in fixing up bikes but the level of rust on the lugs is beyond what I feel confident judging.
Is this something you can get rid off while keeping the frame roadworthy?

I love those old Reynolds frames, I have a 531. If it was me I’d get it stripped down and take a look at the damage with the paint gone, but from the photos it just looks like surface rust to me

probably minor. If you can, just clean that up with sandpaper, and put nail polish, should be fine if doesn’t go deep.

Clean it up with a fibre glass pen to see how deep it is. On the lugs it shouldn’t be so bad because they are thick enough. You could of course hunt down the same frame but larger for driving and transplant the parts and use the smaller one as a wall-hanger. In this case the rust wouldn’t be so much of an issue.

Wd40, scrape with steel wool, steel bristle brush, or whatever else. When you get the rust off – wash it, dry it, seal it. Someone said nail polish which I never thought of but seems like a great sealant. Could paint or use a clear coat of poly as well. I like rustoleum spray paint.
