Roadhog has always been a problem for the game since day one, this is a spirited argument that he has and always will be by far the worst hero ever added to Overwatch. Which is a damn bold claim, and it sure isn’t just because he’s fat.

  1. I think they should just change hook to not be a hard stun and more like hinder. That way other characters can use abilities (maybe movement maybe not). This increases counter play for the victim and increases risk for the hog since he is also guaranteeing damage towards him.

I feel like this is the best way to go since the hog keeps the fantasy of hooking and one shotting whilst the receiver doesn't have to completely change the way they play.

  2. Seeing people complain about hog/ball torture are the same people who said double shield ran the game, when hog/ball and hog/zarya was fun comps to play instead of double shield being dominant.
6v6 is fun, new players are scared of playing a harder game.
Hog being meta early on in this game was fun yet people find every reason to complain, wahhhh one shots..

  3. i feel like hook would feel a lot better to fight if it had a short wind up animation before it came out(like two twirls around the wrist, how you usualy throw roped weapons) cuz then theres a window to shut it down if you pay attention

  4. See, back in overwatch 1 I found that roadhog did work, as an "offtank" because back then there were two tanks, you could sacrifice some defense for good offense and still have a rein to cover you, but he's not a good central tank, he wasn't designed for it and it seems like they're just sort of doing whatever now and have given up

  5. Road hog is easy to fix just make him grapple to walls, now this seems like a flat buff but it’s not it means every time you miss a hook your likely out of position and to close to the enemy team. I’d probably shorten the cooldown by 1 second so that it’s at least possible for a hog to survive and get out if he does miss. But this increases the skill ceiling and floor and in general he can cover his general weaknesses being a slow character with the sacrifice of hook kills for mobility

  6. Hog makes the player base better. He simply punishes bad positioning. Plus hook is a very televised skill and is a very react-able projectile. As players get better in OW, they know to look for roadhog, track hook's cooldown, and either bait/maneuver/wiff-punish hook (all good OW skills). Hog gets the worst punishment compared to any other tank when he misses his hook or if caught out in the open. RoadHog is very well designed hero with lots of counter play and is healthy for the game. People who get mad at hog are either new, have bad habits (i.g. walk in a straight line), and/or don't learn from mistakes.
Like Sigma is a truly oppressive tank w/one-hit kill combo.

  7. I really enjoyed this video and there's a lot of great analysis of tank design but as a person who played Roadhog a lot until a couple seasons into Overwatch 2, you completely lost me at the point where you stated that the reason people enjoy Roadhog is because they like ruining peoples' games… like that's some kind of objective fact? Just kinda jarring on a video that's been pretty factual at that point to then curveball with a really stinging assumption. Yikes.
I think there's a difference between people who play Roadhog as a competitive standpoint and a necessity to gain SR/rank ups, and people who enjoy Roadhog. People who fall onto Roadhog because he's easy and makes it so you don't have to bother with learning the game and tank design… yeah I hate those players too. I personally think that the issue with Roadhog is that his character design is TOO good. As in, from and art perspective (not game design). Roadhog IS a fat bastard. He IS a bully, the one-man-apocalypse, and everything from his visuals, his voice acting heck even the way he walks and breathes completely sells that this guy is a menace. When I first played Overwatch I played Zenyatta and Roadhog before In knew anything about the game because they were freaking cool, and people stick with their mains because of how cool they are, just like Genji players who stick by him through thick and thin because they liked that Dragons cinematic. Blizzard effectively wrote themselves into a corner with Roadhog, because he's fundamentally impossible to rework without absolutely scrapping him and rebuilding him (or having a weight loss arc where he becomes a shredded DPS).

You even said it yourself. Blizzard didn't really know what they're doing with tanks. So how did anyone else when they picked up Roadhog for the first time and loved him, unbeknownst of how problematic he'd be?

We're seeing a similar thing play out in modern OW with Mauga, where Blizzard has absolutely nailed an AMAZING character design, but have totally written themselves into a corner. Who is Mauga without his twin miniguns? Who is Roadhog when he's not the one-man-apocalypse?
I don't have the magic cure for tank design either, and sorry that this comment is a nothing-burger, but I just wanted to make it crystal clear that the stereotype of people who play 'x problematic character' aren't sweats who want to abuse broken mechanics for easy wins. I, and most the people I know who like extremely terrible or unhealthy characters like Roadhog is because they just like the funny pig.

  8. i agree with nearly everything in this video but i think the take about hog being the best solo carry is wrong.. i think its widow by a large margin

  9. I think only healthy tanks in this game are Winston, Sigma and Ramattra. However i think Winston and Sigma are overtuned. JQ is good but i think Ram is definitely the best design. He has the softest pressure and he isn't invulnerable. You can bully him and you can play around him, you can avoid him. He gives you a lot of leeway. Ram is the perfect tank. Even his ''cc'' vortex has more of a manipulating battlefield aspect to it rather than targeting someone to kill. Fun fact, vortex cast time is as slow as Rein's shatter.
You underestimate how lethal knife is. JQ is more like a healthy version of Hog. JQ is their attempt to fix que times i think because she has that tempting flashy dps playstyle and good burst as well as agility.
If you look at it, Ram and JQ are basically more healthy versions of Rein and Hog.

Rein is a ow1 hero that is gigabuffed and shoehorned in to ow2. Very unhealthy and wonky.
I hate Orisa and Doomfist the most.
Hog is the most flawed though. I'd just make Hog and Doomfist dps instead. Just make hook cc don't work against tanks. He can be a dps. Release new tank heroes if you are worried about que times.
Incorporate Efi to Orisa's design and rework her. Orisa is the worst hero in the game by far in every aspect. She needs a glow up. Metal robot horse is just not a tempting hero fantasy.

  10. I continue to be amazed by your videos. So many little fundamentals woven together into a coherent topic with interesting direction, I don't know how to explain it better. Your videos just seem "full" and are a joy to watch. I feel like I become an Overwatch expert by the time I'm done with the video.

  11. Bro you were cooking until like the final 10 minutes I was 100% agreeing but then talking about rien charge cancel and Zarya bubble and then it went down hill to then saying tanks can’t be lethal at all and it all comes from the 5v5 format and tanks have to do 1.5x the damage and do the jobs of 2 tanks rather than just 1. I agree up until that final part but good video

  12. Rein's pin being cancelable is by no means unfair, the only time you can actually do what you've just described 37:38 without taking on massive risk is when a significant proportion of the enemy's team is already dead, and even then so many heroes can just leave via movement or even punish you by themselves ( ana).

I would go as to say pinning to get close to someone is only effective as a way to clean up the enemy team after winning in a team fight and otherwise wastes a large ammount of health and or resources.

Cool, thanks for generalizing all hog players into, "we just want to curb stomp a lobby"
I'm sure hog mains wont just completely throw away every point you've made in this video.
I used to be a hog main until queen came out. And i genuinely only played the character for the hook. Max range hooking some and swinging your mouse around like a rabid dog is the only thing i cared about. Not survivability, not because its easy or whatever else. I understand your point you are trying to make. The character by design and especially with blizzards actions compounding that type of player. But you're shooting yourself in the foot for that type of mindset.

If you want actual constructive change and awareness on a fundamental issues with a character, maybe don't alienate the ones that are most likely to listen to you.

And i get that this is a game. But maybe just dont do that in general? It makes you a shit stain of a person irl, why does a game make it okay? You might as well be just as toxic as the players you're thinking about when you wrote that.

  14. I think Roadhog would do better to play against and still be fun if you give him his old scrap gun spread back along with the alternate fire, on top of changing his trap into something more active like an electric net maybe (basically the trap but you huck it at enemy gamers) or give him something with that big olé gun on his back. That way he can still murder people but it's not just hook and shoot. Also had the idea that Hog could choose to crush his healing canister in his hand to create something like soldiers heal that heals up to like 300hp spread amongst your team. He needs more things to do that get value other than "hehe I hook enemy team and go bang" before removing that will feel "good"

  15. I wonder if hog hook would feel better to play against if it only slightly moved the victim (like lucio boop or venture boop type distance at most), and instead did damage as hog pulls it back and scrapes it on the character. Something closer to an odd firestrike.

Or maybe the hook chains it to the victim, and hog begins to crank the hook back, slowing both players and starting a tug of war. This puts the hog in a more vulnerable place to be punished as well as giving a window to save the hooked player.

    I dunno, just spitballing

  16. Roadhog players should've never been taken seriously. They nerfed the hook, player rate dropped, and move on honestly. If you wanna just delete people, play a DPS. If you're trying to play a Tank, there are numerous good options and combos.

  17. Watching through your telegraphing abilities and damage section, and realized that, yeah, it is weird roadhog could instakill you from such a wild range. I didn't realize how different an outcome that was compared to the other OG tanks where winning a duel just meant the opponents had to reposition. I wonder if adding a charge to his hook swing to increase the range would help at all.
Also I kind of like don't care if the onboarding process for new players is hard lol. all games these days suck for the first 1000 hours its just a fact of life
But to wrap up, your conclusion was solid. Roadhog is a character that is just who DPS players play when they have to play tank. maybe thats ok
oh jesus you are so right. they turned every tank into hog. no tank ability is clearly is telegraphed anymore and they can survive through everything 🙁

how naive I was going into this comment…. Started typing at 12 minutes and stopped typing at the end of the video. good stuff 🙂
