Siegmund and Sieglinde find themselves drawn together during a storm. Unbeknown to them their father Wotan, chief of the gods, hopes through Siegmund to retrieve a ring of ultimate power.

Die Walküre stands at the pinnacle of Romantic musical drama. Barely has the curtain opened when Wagner unleashes orchestral writing that sweeps everything away in its path. Storm, incest, divine wrath, irrepressible passion: everything is there to announce the tortuous destiny of the heroes. Through a composition in which every instrument contributes to the tragedy, Wagner begins the story proper, illuminating words and scenes with his famous leitmotifs that run beneath the singers, pass into their voices, transform and resurface as the plot develops. It is not surprising that Die Walküre (second part of the Ring of the Nibelung) is widely regarded as the most popular and the most moving. Likened to a Bayreuth in the English countryside, Longborough Festival stages a new production following the socially-distanced concert performance of Die Walküre in 2021. This new 2024 production is seen for the first time as part of Longborough’s 2024 Ring cycle. It is directed by Amy Lane, Artistic Director of Copenhagen Opera Festival, and conducted by Anthony Negus, Longborough Music Director and eminent Wagnerian.

  2. Прекрасная Фрика, и Зиглинда, и Зигмунд. Ребята играют отлично, вкладываются по-полной, в отличии от записных звёзд, которых я слышал немало. С удовольствием сидел бы в зале. И артикуляция отличная, а несовершенства голосовые можно простить. Театральный праздник! Это очень ценно. Акцент на индивидуальности певцов без режиссерской лобуды. Я в восторге. Браво!

  4. Many thanks to Operavision and the Longborough Festival Opera for presenting the opera in razor-sharp 4k resolution. The quality of the 4k transfer is excellent, coping well with the low stage lighting. There is a beautifully natural sense of sharpness to the images, as well as more detail in dark areas than you normally get and we are able to view the entire stage without missing any details. It is definitely a staging that has benefited greatly from filming in 4K.

  5. It’s nearly 50 years since I first (and last) watched The Valkyrie [Bayreuth, Gwyneth Jones as Brunhilde]. I had forgotten much of the detail of the story.
    This performance was stunning. Beautifully staged, magnificent voices and acting. The final scene between Wotan and Brunhilde was so intimate and heart-wrenching.
    For me the only drawback was Brunhilde’s overblown vibrato.

    Curious to know why Fricka was absent from the final bows. I know she only has a (relatively) small part, but still. Her voice and stage presence were superb.

  6. Wonderful production, nice and clean, not the kind of garish clutter we see far too often. I loved the thought-provoking interpretations on the acting/directing side, adding meaning and interest to the text rather than changing it around. A standing ovation for Emma Bell and Paul Carey Jones in particular. Thank you all for this!

  7. Very fine production both musically and emotionally. I found it stirring, though I wondered about some of the directorial choices here and there, but that is the stuff of life.
