So I got a new saddle with a seat post cos my old one was kaput and turns out the outer diameter of the seat post was marginally smaller than the inner diameter of the frame so I used this as a small piece of sheet metal and clamped it on. Just did a test run on relatively rough terrain and it held up. Should I be worried for safety going forward or can I consider the job done? This is my first ever bike repair so I’d love some inputs from the community, thank you so much!

Use your old post. With the new seat.
Loosen a bolt (2 sides, actually) on new seat, pull seat off, pop seat on old post (yeah I know, you have to remove the old seat), tighten two sides. Done.
I’ve had such experience and it did not go well. The can shim held for about a couple of days. It was a race day when it suddenly went down.
ISO 0.2mm shim material as beloved of bodgers everywhere. Totally legit.
