So I’ve posted on this subreddit a few times now regarding my bike fit, I think I’ve got it pretty much dialed since the last post thanks to the advice of raising the saddle a little. Went out today for a little spin and my knees were hurting when I got out of the saddle, now I know that my feet point out quite a lot when cycling and even moreso when I get out of the saddle (this is from what I’ve seen on my MTB with flat pedals). The knee pain isn’t anything too painful, just a niggle but I thought I’d try and sort it before it becomes something more than that.

Specifically, I feel the knee pain on the top of the pedal stroke when out of the saddle, and it feels like it’s coming from the top of my knee. I’ve noticed it occasionally, on some rides it’s there and on some it isn’t. Should I try moving the angle of the cleats further out? I’m just a little worried my shoes might start hitting the chainstay..

  1. I tried cleat shoes once, got 3 months knee pain. Now I use flats pedals, it’s the same almost anyway…

  2. You should spend the money and get a bike fit instead of asking for advice online. It’s safer, especially if you don’t know how you fit on a bike. Asking online is better for tweaking but especially with your knee pain you NEED to see someone who knows what they’re doing. You may need spacers or to drastically change your riding position. A fitter can solve.

    1. You need a bike fit
    2. Those look totally off. Google a bit and see what a neutral cleat position is. You also need to then figure out are you neutral aka have straight limbs or any imbalances. For example at my bike fit he determined i am all balanced and straight so my cleats are in neutral.

For sure have them point straight not inside.

It is really crucial to diagnose your movement accurately in order to avoid pain or injury. Your description and a photo of your cleat position isn’t nearly sufficient to do that – especially if you know you have some movement anomalies. From cleat position and rotation, to crank length, saddle height, fore/aft position, up/down inclination… A lot of variables to adjust to your biomechanics.

You would really benefit from someone with expertise and experience seeing you legs in motion on the bike. I.e. to get a bike fit to ensure ideal leg motion.
