even if it split, the spokes will keep it from coming apart, really depends on the rider and the situation.
What I expect is the rim is got hit by a curb. If its not bent, isn’t flexing there I would keep it.
If safety is 100%, then replace it. If its being used off road on jumps, replace it.
If that is around town, on dirt roads bike, not being used at high speeds, I would ride till it falls off.

Yeah, you can just throw some caulk in there and it’ll be fine. Duct tape would work in a pinch, but not masking tape or scotch tape.

Look into a replacement wheelset if they will continue riding this bike for a while. If they’re ready for something bigger anyways it might not be worth putting new wheels on this.
