12 year old brought his bike home after a ride (pavement and gravel), saying this happened after he tried to shift. Seems unlikely to me, but what do you all think?
Cheap Walmart "mountain" bike. Is this even worth trying to fix!?
If the derailleur was not properly set up this can absolutely happen. It should be a relatively affordable fix.

Just had to replace the derailleur on my nephews Walmart bike. It was $15 for a way better part than what came stock.

The derailleur looks pretty proprietary. There seems to be no derailleur hanger? I believe you would have to make a custom derailleur hanger using the part of the old derailleur that is attached to the frame or find an adapter to mount a standard hanger.

Some derailleurs are just too much plastic and not enough substance.
