Found this picture of me at 17 riding the first bike I built, and thought people on this sub might find it interesting. Rigid single speed mtbs were the alt-bike fad back then, but I couldn’t afford one from a bike shop, so I decided to make one.

I found a cheap 1994 GT Karakoram with a blown mag21 fork and converted it to single speed with a tensioner. I got lucky and found a used single speed wheelset with Surly hubs and Salsa Gordo rims, and a Surly Instigator rigid fork. I crimped the chainstays to fit 26×2.5 tires, and swapped the cockpit for a modernish shortish stem and wideish bars.

In the end I turned a reasonably practical bike into a completely impractical, but RAD ripper! This is the bike that started it all for me.

  1. I’ve heard of people crimping chain stays before. Is there some sort of DIY method to this or is it just mad science?
