Gday

Looking to buy my first serious bikepacking setup, and being in AUS the choices and prices are quite different to the Amercian and EU markets.

I'm looking for a bike that:

  • Has a steel frame
  • Drop bars preferred
  • Thru Axles preferred
  • Disc Brakes preferred
  • Can fit 700C

I plan to be riding for weeks around New Zealand Mountains and Australian rural roads and fire trails, running a rear rack, small panniers, handlebar bag and frame bag. Budgetwise, I'm happy to spend around $3k on the bike and an additional $1k on accessories. (AUD)

My current research has led me to the following options

2024 Marin Four Corners 1 for $1699 – https://www.bikesonline.com.au/2024-marin-four-corners-1-adventure-gravel-bike Whilst the components are lower grade and it has QR axles, it still seems like a pretty well equipped bike for my needs, and the low price means I can spend big on the top quality racks, panniers, etc. 3×9 gearing

2024 Marin Four Corners 2 for $2699 – https://www.bikesonline.com.au/2024-marin-four-corners-2-adventure-gravel-bike This is what I'm currently leaning towards. SRAM drivetrain, thru axles, and up to 2" tyres. 1×12 gearing

2021 Surly Disc Trucker $3390 – https://www.omafiets.com.au/surly-disc-trucker-2021-complete.html This seems like the 'buy it for life' option but at the most cost. I would likely spend less on the racks and panniers and upgrade those later. 3×9 gearing. Seem to be paying a bit extra for the brand.

My current run around town bike is a Scento Metro HD https://silverbackbikes.de/products/scento-metro-hd

What are your thoughts? Are there any other bikes available in the australian market that would be decent? I could get a bridge club for $2900 but that seems like alot to pay for QR axles.
