Another border crossing in the height of Costa Rica’s rainy season.

First loosely following the Gira de Costa and Nicoya Traverse bikepacking routes, I snaked across dense jungle connecting muddy backroads to lively beach towns.

Some river crossings were rideable, while some required a carry. Others ran so deep and fast with an opaque bronze color that you couldn’t know for sure if there were crocodiles in the water. I had to detour inland for miles in search of another way across.

All the while the iguanas were two feet long. Spider monkeys and howlers barked from above. The beaches stay golden despite the storms, all the way out to the horizon where life approaches mystery.
