So I bought a beautiful new Canyon ultimate CF SLX 8 last month and I noticed that my steering felt slightly off and it was as if I was leaning to the left. A small amount, but noticeable for me. After a week of this issue I decided to inspect my bike more thoroughly and I noticed that the rear wheel appeared to be not in line with the midline of the frame nor the front wheel. I opened a claim with Canyon, and I got pretty good customer service at first, they offered a reimbursement of $100 to get it inspected by a service partner to determine whether it was a frame issue or wheel dish issue.

I had it inspected and the service partner confirmed the wheel dish was fine, the frame symmetry was fine, but the wheel appeared to be slightly diagonal in relation to the frame, suggesting a possible issue with the dropout alignment. After waiting a week for Canyons reply, they told me the only way they could help me was if I sent the whole bike back to them to have it “checked”. This in my opinion is bull💩, especially considering the problem was “checked” and confirmed by their service partner. Is my frustration misplaced? I know of people who have sent bikes into their workshop, not getting any sort of resolution for months…. I just feel like there has to be a better way to deal with this, like sending a replacement frame.

I’m attaching photos of the issue below. I’m curious if people think that this level of misalignment on an $8,400 CAD is acceptable, or if anyone else has had this issue. Since I can notice this when riding, I personally think it’s unacceptable.

For some context on the photos- in the ones where the bike is upside down, I have perfectly aligned the front wheel with the bike midline so you can see the different directional relation of the rear wheel in comparison to that. Also, the red broomstick is being held flush with the trailing and leading edge of the rear wheel, allowing it to show how the rear wheel points diagonally. The other photos show how significantly the rear wheel is kicked out at the rear in relation to the head and seat tubes, which have been confirmed to be in the midline of the bike.

  1. It’s nearly impossible to misalign the dropout in the process of manufacturing. To be honest the picutres are subjective as hell. And canyon did what they are able to (get the frame inspected by da service partner or ask to send it back for inspection). Get a laser to align the front an rear wheel. The frame is a little asymmetric but that’s the Natur of frames because so much more is happening on the drive side. Also the cp0018 cockpit tends to steer a little due to brakeline tension (when you lift the front end the brake lines of the rear brake will almost all the time steer the fork). I hope you get this cleared as soon as possible for you to enjoy your bike!
