Hi there ✌️
Me and a friend travels from Passau to Budapest with our bikes and planed to go back by train. Now wo do have tickets but our bikes don’t and somehow we need to get them back as well. The best solution we had so far was a Bike Travel Bag but we went through Budapest today and there are NONE. Now we have to find an other way.
Train goes in 2 Days so no ordering online.
We can’t stay any longer and bock other ways of transportation with our bikes that we know of.
Open for any idea, pls help !

  1. Large Cardboard boxes. Go to a local bike shop and they may have leftovers if they’ve built a new bike recently.

  2. Get a roll of cling film and tape, then at the station remove the front wheel, turn the bars sideways, maybe remove the pedals, then wrap up to allow carrying.
Needs to be small to fit luggage spaces, the cardboard boxes tend to be too big.

  3. Go to jegy.mav.hu website, fill in with your destination, date etc, then choose bike as a passenger. You can buy bike tickets individually, just add a bike and delete other passengers. You can show your ticket to the staff on your phone as well. You don’t have to pack your bikes in a bag, carry it assembled to the train, you just have to leave it at a designated place, sometimes far from your seat. Note, that you actually cannot bring a packed bike in the seated area, bc it is bigger than the allowed baggage size. I don’t know if it would be a real problem, I always see people with luggage in excessive size.

Maybe you can send them separately via Mail, DHL or something like that? Get two cardboard boxes, pack it up nicely and go to the next Mail station.

I had a similar problem several years ago. Tried to get back from Budapest to Germany. In my case the problem was Austria. I was able to get to Bratislava using the train. From Bratislava I had to use a combo of local trains and riding the bike to get to Breclav on the Czech side, which then allowed me to get to Prague. From Prague I was able to get to Dresden.

  6. You’re worrying over literally nothing. Just take them on the train. Buy a bike ticket from the conductor on the train if asked about them.

Man, this sub is just becoming a craigslist for people that didn’t bother to plan their trips.

Have you considered taking a bus at all? I traveled Berlin -> Oslo with my bike in a cardboard box because it was cheaper than shipping it and there were no issues. Just a thought.

  9. You lads been getting much sleep in them? In the heat I found them unbearable. Fuckin ace for wild camping though

  10. Isn’t there a bus, Flixbus?, going from Budapest up north? I heard that it should be possible to put one or two bikes “under” the bus.

  11. Seriously, just disassemble your bikes (removing wheels and bar and strap them to the frame) and cover it with trash bags. Works totally fine in an ICE (you can even put the bike on the top luggage storage). Did that just a month ago.
