First ride with a clipless set up yesterday. I practiced a few times and thought I had it nailed. I also thought I didn’t need gloves. Two lessons were learned today. (Blood warning)

Sorry you learned the glove lesson the hard way. The clipless thing is apparently in everyone’s destiny at some point!

In my opinion, unless your cleat is popping out while you’re riding, you can’t have your pedals too loose.

Gloves on rings off for all cycling for me, I’ve seen what rings can do when caught on things 🤮

Also leave the ring at home next time 😉

Bummer, glad you’re okay overall. Clipless riders and motorcycle riders have this in common – there two types of riders, those who have gone down and those who will go down.
Both times I’ve had a clipped in tumble were in front of an audience and at almost zero speed. Once I forgot I was clipped in when rolling to a stop and sort of “whumped” over when I realized too late. My buddies thought I was riding drunk.

A rite of passage, friend. Glad you’re okay but protect your hands and fingers!

That’s similar to (a little worse than) me last year when a baby deer popped out in front of me. I no longer brake hard for squirrels or rabbits but I took one for the fawn, which bounced and then ran away.
That was without clips of any kind, I just started using clipless this year and love it, no spills yet. Gloves I should probably do.

You can practice all you want but until you’re actually out there it’s a whole different story. I agree with others saying loosen up your retention until you have that muscle memory. You’ll get there, we’ve all been there

I wear mountain bike gloves for that reason. Even with gravel/road gloves you run the risk of mangling your fingertips. I lost a chunk of skin on my pinky early this year. I play guitar so I try to protect my hands .

Clipless is the most useless and dangerous meme that ever came in the cycling world, it has been proven on many occasion that that it brings no performance advantage.
worse, it puts you in danger and will damage your joints in the long run
