On a ride through the Bent Creek Trails near Asheville, NC I encountered this beautiful snake crossing the road. This is a mature timber rattler normally an elusive snake. It was amazing to watch its camouflage work, as it dissolved back into the forest as soon as it left the road. Slithering at an even speed (no rush or fear of me) as the leaves and canopy shade, add contrast, and shadows are the perfect cover for this venomous pit viper. One thing I love about gravel cycling is when nature shows you something you might not see on a road or in a populated area. The gravel bike enables you to get out and explore the serpentine roads through forests and hard to reach places. Ride on!

Aside for a dead copperhead, I’ve only seen a cottonmouth.
