It’s the 4th round of the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship race series at the stunning Trac Môn Anglesey Circuit in north Wales.
Due to its proximity to the sea, the salty sea breeze makes Anglesey’s surface changeable and hard to predict but Luke is pleasantly surprised at his pace and performance in Friday testing.
A wet Saturday morning dawns which, theoretically, would give Luke an advantage as he performs well in wet conditions but, for some reason, none of the AB Motorsport drivers manage to recreate their pace from testing into qualifying results and Luke is set to start 5th on the grid for Race 1 later in the day.
Unfortunately, the same happens in Race 1 and, despite moving up to 4th at one point, Luke finishes in 5th position.
The team de-brief and try to find ways to go faster for Race 2 on Sunday morning but they encounter the same issues. The obvious answer is a combination of tyre degradation and set up – something which, at Anglesey, appears to be akin to the dark arts! Despite ending up in P4, Luke feels he is off the pace and down on power but it’s difficult to tell given how the circuit changes.
A minor set-up change gives a chance to join in the battle for a podium but, after a challenge from team-mate, Ewan, he crosses the line in P5.
Not the weekend we had hoped for results-wise but still Luke’s best finishes at this track.
With Daphne off to the AB Motorsport workshop for her mid-season “medical”, we put this weekend behind us and look forward to round 5 at Croft!
